About Taos
Taos, New Mexico becomes a place in the heart as well as a place on the earth. The amazing, ever changing sky and the beauty of Taos Mountain rival some of the most beautiful spots on our planet. Every season offers something special to enjoy…..a lot of special somethings to enjoy in fact!
In the Autumn, the air is crisp, the sky is blue and clear and the aspens turn to shimmering gold. The drive to Tierra Amarilla from Tres Piedras is especially breath-taking during this season. The same highway is usually closed in the winter if the snowfall is particularly heavy. Another favorite in the Fall is the ever-popular drive around the Enchanted Circle which includes Taos, Questa, Red River,Eagle Nest and Angel Fire. Be sure not to miss this one!
If you are a hiker, hiking to Williams Lake in the autumn and summer is also a must. The hike starts near the Bavarian Restaurant and the # 4 chairlift taking skiers to the Kachina Bowl. It is good for the whole family and will be remembered and repeated many times. There are so many wonderful hikes in the Taos area and beyond that they are too numerous to be mentioned here.
At the end of September, we have some wonderful outdoor activities including the San Geronimo Feast Day at the Taos Pueblo, the Wool Festival in Kit Carson Park, the Martinez Hacienda Trade Fair and several other art and crafts fairs. It is truly a very special time in the Taos Valley.
During the winter season, skiing at the world class Taos Ski Valley is a fabulous experience for all levels of skiers…..especially at the intermediate and expert level as it is a very challenging and satisfying mountain. Of course, the beginners are provided with some wonderful terrain also and learn control quickly or else! As Taos Ski Valley makes their own snow if necessary, you may still ski on the mountain until Easter as a rule and you may even see some hearty souls wearing shorts!
In the Spring as the snow is melting and the flowers are starting to bloom, The Spring Arts Festival begins its colorful show and it is loved by art lovers world wide. All the Taos galleries participate and gallery-hopping is a must! It may also be a good time to check out the galleries in Santa Fe also.
Summer is the busiest time of year in our valley for the most part. Lots of tourists come up to our 6900 foot altitude to beat the heat in their lower lying neighborhoods. It is a great time for hiking, biking, rafting, cycling and other numerous outdoor sports or just checking out the many shops near and around Taos Plaza. There are also many activities in the Summer such as the Taos Indian Pow Wow which takes place in July on the Pow Wow grounds just north of the Overland Sheepskin Company on Paseo del Pueblo Norte. Tribes from all over the country come to dance and play drums in this colorful competition. There is flavorful food along with vendors selling all types of creative wares such as pottery, jewelry, weavings and much more. If you are lucky, you may even see a double rainbow over Taos Mountain!
Hope to see you soon and don’t forget your camera…..
